Halse were looking to bounce back from a narrow loss last week against Deddington having lost 4-3.
The game started off slowly for both teams with neither creating any real chances, however Kings Sutton broke the deadlock when a defensive mixup between keeper Howard Holmes and Ryan Murphy saw the ball turn into the back of the Halse net off Murphy’s head.
Halse then responded almost instantly when a quick throw in saw striker Adam Hilton pick the ball up roughly 35 yards out, he turned towards the Sutton goal, and struck one so sweet it seem to travel in slow motion. The ball rocketed into the back of the net off the underside of the bar. The Sutton keeper could only stand and watch as the ball flew past him.
The rest of the half was mostly uneventful with the game being battled out in the midfield.
Half time - Halse 1 - 1 Kings Sutton
Second half saw much of the same with the game being played at a surprisingly slow pace. Sutton had the majority of the chances and should have done more with a few 1 on 1s. Halse’s backline were solid with an especially strong performance from George Kingham. Dean Ingram did well to keep the ball when Halse did go forward courtesy of constant midfield battling from Ollie Read, Liam Simpson and co.
Both teams seem to slow up towards the end of the game, however Read saw an opportunity to drive forward and found himself in the box, Sutton’s skipper made a silly tackle and took Read clean out. Penalty Halse.
The pressure was on for penalty taker Kingham and it wasn’t helped when wing back Ben Lloyd decided to prematurely enter the box after Kingham had converted. Luckily the pressure did not rattle Kingham and he once again slotted home.
A dogged performance from Halse and in no way a pretty win, however taking 3 points off a very strong Sutton side is always nice.
Onto next week where Halse played Higham Town in the County Cup
